"Nuovo ARO" oxygen rebreather, firma "Technisub", comes (in the seventies) from the cunning mind of Luigi Ferraro (WW II gold medal and Technisub firma owner). I've always felt this project like as obeisance to Italian oxygen rebreathers' tradition than an apparatus born just for the "market". Its technical features shows how the design efforts were addressed to reach the perfection in oxygen rebreathers. In this picture we can see the military version with non-magnetic twin tanks.
The civilian version has, generally, a single tank.
The rear view shows that scrubber canister is the main body of the apparatus: counterlung, hoses, harnesses and tanks are linked to it.
Tank is linked to main body by sliding bracket.
The tank can be detached by pressing on the locking cog.
Now the bracket can slide along the guides.

Tank's bracket and plate are hold by a canvas belt.

Below the tank there is a plate that allows the rig to stand.

To remove the protecting shell, the locking crown must first be unscrewed.
Then lift upward, turning it at the base

When it's in vertical position is possible to take out the pins.

Pins are shaped to take out from pin's attachments by rotating the protecting shield 90 degrees.

The counterung is linked to scrubber canister by two plastic molded rings, hold by apposite screws.
To remove the counterlung we must extract the nuts by unscrewing.

The counterlung is made from injection molded rubber. At top we can see the cam that allows switching from manual to automatic Oxygen supply.

Dismantled counterlung and protecting shield, we can see the main body developed around scrubber canister.

Side sight of Scrubber canister: the box cover can be removed by unscrewing the t-nut at cap's center.
The box cover is provided with rubber gaskets in order to seal the part of the loop from soda lime canister.
Here's the main body: upside the ADV and at diver's left the water trap. Below the tans' bracket locking cog.
The loop is counterclockwise, scrubber canister is divided into two chambers: the left side exhaling chamber and water trap, it scrubs the exhaled gas, at diver's right ones scrubs the inhale gas coming from counterlung. The Dwell time is very high and the gas path is 32 cm (12,8 inches), furthermore there is no need to clog the soda lime, as the scrubber canister's shape doesn't' allow channeling.
The exhaled gas turns around a baffle placed in order to drive the water drops into trap.
The DSV works fine and despite the small size the work of breathing is very low.

Grid on inspiration chamber: may be removed by sliding on its own guides. After passing the grid, the inhaled gas passes through a sponge matter that protects the low-pressure line.

The sponge matter is shaped to fit the low pressure line.
| |
Pressure reducer and by-pass are integrated in a single device.
The low-pressure lines enter the main body at diver's right: one supply oxygen to ADV, the other from by-pass when operating manually.
Then a single low pressure line supply oxygen to second stage as the by-pass supplies an overpressure able to open the second stage.

A wrench is also supplied to operate lime and water trap ports. |

This funnel fits the filling ports to fill scrubber canister with soda lime. It's made from wet suits neoprene. |
The filling adapter is composed from various parts in order to fit to the most Oxygen supply tanks available in the world. |
When are foreseen not too long dive times, then the special volume reducers may be inserted into chamber: the autonomy is reduced but not so efficiency. |
